The Windrunners,
An Epic First
An Epic First
The Windrunners made their debut in Chicago, taking the starting line as Nike’s first women’s-only racing team. Made up of 13 runners who had little-to-no marathon experience—some just starting their training this summer—the idea was to pit crazy dreams against 26.2 miles and see which would come out the winner.
“I took Joan Benoit Samuelson’s advice and decided to smile throughout the race so the next generation can see the joy of the sport.” - Britney Whitehead

The results were clear. One of Windrunners ended up with a new PR, while another ended up running her first marathon with a time of 2:58. Regardless of how tough it got, it was never in their minds to give up. All the team had was one another, a crazy dream and a goal to advance the sport for women.
